India's exam scam

India has had several infamous exam scams over the years, shaking the education and employment systems. These scams, spanning various states and exam types, highlight issues like corruption, political influence, and systemic flaws that affect millions of aspiring students and job-seekers. Here are some of the most significant exam scams in recent years:

1. Vyapam Scam (Madhya Pradesh)

The Vyapam scam is one of the most notorious exam scams in India, involving the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (Vyavsayik Pariksha Mandal or Vyapam). This scam first came to light in 2013 but dates back to the early 2000s. Here’s what happened:

Scale: It involved a vast network of politicians, bureaucrats, middlemen, and students who conspired to manipulate exam scores and admissions for medical and other professional courses.

Modus Operandi: Exam-takers were hired to impersonate real candidates, and bribes were accepted to alter scores or leak question papers.

Impact: Over 2,000 arrests have been made, and nearly 50 people related to the investigation have died under mysterious circumstances.

Outcome: The scam sparked a national outrage and eventually led to the investigation by the CBI. Although arrests have been made, cases are still ongoing.

2. Bihar Toppers Scam

In 2016, the Bihar education system faced an embarrassing scandal when students who topped the Class 12 board exams couldn’t answer basic questions about their subjects in television interviews.

Key Figures: Ruby Rai, a humanities topper who referred to political science as "prodigal science" and claimed it involved cooking, became the face of the scandal.

Investigation: It revealed that officials in the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) were bribed to inflate the marks of students in exchange for money.

Outcome: Multiple arrests followed, including that of BSEB chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh. The scandal also led to reforms within the BSEB.

3. NEET Exam Scam

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) has been mired in several controversies, especially related to cheating and question paper leaks.

Issues: Instances of impersonation, leaked papers, and digital cheating have marred the credibility of NEET. In one notorious case, candidates hired "proxy" exam-takers to sit the test on their behalf.

Recent Incidents: In 2021, a major scam was uncovered where students in Maharashtra used Bluetooth devices and received answers during the exam.

Consequences: These repeated instances have led to stricter security measures in exam centers, like the use of metal detectors and jammers.

4. SSC Exam Scam (Staff Selection Commission)

The SSC, responsible for recruiting candidates for various government jobs, saw allegations of a massive exam scam in 2018.

Nature of Scam: Reports emerged of candidates using unfair means to manipulate scores in the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) exam. Evidence of online cheating, including hacking the servers, was uncovered.

Public Outcry: Students protested across the country, demanding a CBI probe.

Result: After widespread protests, the government agreed to a CBI investigation. The case raised concerns about the reliability of SSC’s online exam process.

5. Tamil Nadu Medical Admission Scam

Tamil Nadu’s medical admission process was rocked by a scandal where students used fake “Nativity Certificates” to claim reserved seats meant for Tamil Nadu residents in NEET.

Issue: Several candidates from other states acquired false nativity certificates to gain an advantage in Tamil Nadu's medical seats.

Response: This led to the cancellation of admissions for many students and reinforced calls for stricter verification of documents.

Underlying Issues and Reforms

Corruption: These scams highlight deep-rooted corruption in educational institutions and recruiting bodies.

Political Influence: In many cases, political connections have been found to be instrumental in facilitating these frauds.

Inadequate Security: Lack of adequate security measures at exam centers has made it easy for people to cheat, manipulate, or hack systems.

Reforms: In response, several boards and exam-conducting authorities are adopting digital security measures like biometric verification, metal detectors, and better invigilation.

Conclusion

Exam scams in India reveal a major flaw in the nation’s examination and recruitment systems. While arrests and reforms have been made, the persistence of these issues shows that much work is still needed. Until the focus shifts from exams as mere gateways to limited seats and prestigious jobs, exam-related scams are likely to persist.
